NFL season-long player props futures and MVP betting

I placed my best-ever futures bet in June 2022. A quarterback had moved to a new team with a stacked receiving corps, and his season-long passing yards over was set at 4,100. By the time the season started in September, that line had moved to 4,350. I had 250 yards of cushion because I bet early, and he finished the season at 4,200 – an easy cash. That single bet convinced me that season-long props, when timed correctly, are the most underappreciated market in NFL betting.

Season-long props lock in a bet that won’t resolve for months. That sounds unappealing to punters who want instant gratification, but the time horizon is precisely what creates value. Lines are posted months before the season starts, and the information gap between May and September is enormous. The AGA estimated that $30 billion was legally wagered on the NFL in the 2025 season, and a growing portion of that handle comes from futures and season-long player propositions.

Types of NFL Season-Long Props

Season-long props fall into three broad categories, each with different dynamics and different edges.

Player stat totals are the most straightforward. These are over/under bets on a player’s cumulative production across the regular season: total passing yards, total rushing touchdowns, total receptions. The line is set based on projected workload, health probability, and historical output. What makes these bets interesting is that the projection models used to set them are frozen at a specific point in time – usually May or June – and any new information that emerges between then and Week 1 creates potential value.

Award futures are bets on who will win specific end-of-season honours: Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Rookie of the Year. These markets have longer odds and higher variance, but they also carry some of the widest bookmaker margins. The overround on MVP futures can exceed 40-50%, which means you need a massive informational edge to overcome the vig. I bet award futures selectively – typically one or two positions per season where I believe the market has significantly mispriced a candidate.

Team win totals ask whether a team will finish with more or fewer wins than a posted number, typically in the 7.5 to 11.5 range. While these aren’t player props in the strict sense, they’re often grouped with season-long props at UK bookmakers and they reward a similar analytical approach: identifying teams whose projected improvement or decline hasn’t been fully priced into the line.

A fourth category that’s gained traction at UK bookmakers in recent seasons: head-to-head season-long props. These pit two players against each other – “Will Player A or Player B throw more passing touchdowns this season?” – and you pick the winner. These are interesting because they remove the absolute number entirely and focus on relative performance. A season where both quarterbacks underperform their individual lines can still produce a clear winner in the head-to-head, and the pricing on these matchups is often softer than on the individual totals.

When to Place Season-Long Bets

Timing is the edge. Full stop. In a market where $166.94 billion was wagered legally on sports in the US alone in 2025, the volume of money chasing NFL futures during the summer is a fraction of what it will be by August. That thin summer market means prices move slowly and inefficiently.

The best window for season-long player props is late May through mid-June, immediately after the NFL draft. At this point, rookie assignments are known, free agency has settled, and the bookmakers have posted their initial lines based on pre-draft projections that may not fully account for roster changes. A wide receiver who was the WR2 on his team before the draft might now be the WR1 after a trade sent the former starter elsewhere. His receiving yards line, set before the trade, hasn’t moved yet. That’s your window.

The second window opens during training camp in late July and August. This is when beat reporters and local media sources start providing depth chart updates, injury information, and scheme changes that the broader market hasn’t absorbed. A running back winning the starting job over a presumed favourite, or a new offensive coordinator installing a system that heavily favours the tight end – these are the kinds of developments that move season-long lines, but only after enough people notice.

Avoid placing season-long bets during the first two weeks of the regular season. The lines at that point have absorbed all the pre-season information and are as efficient as they’ll ever be before actual game results start shifting them. If you missed the summer windows, wait until Weeks 3-5, when early-season overreactions create new pricing opportunities – a quarterback who throws for 350 yards in Week 1 might see his season-long passing line spike even though one game is a meaningless sample.

NFL MVP Odds: Historical Patterns

MVP betting is the glamour market of NFL futures, and it’s also the most inefficient – but not in the way most punters think. The inefficiency isn’t that the eventual winner is always a longshot who nobody saw coming. Over the past decade, the MVP winner has been one of the pre-season top-5 favourites in most years. The inefficiency is in how the market prices the field.

MVP voting overwhelmingly rewards quarterbacks. In most recent seasons, a quarterback has won the award, and the exceptions have been extraordinary circumstances. Knowing this narrows your focus immediately: the MVP is almost certainly a quarterback on a team that wins 12+ games. If you can identify which quarterbacks are most likely to lead top-3 offences on 12+ win teams, you’ve reduced the realistic candidate pool to 4-6 players.

The value play in MVP futures is finding the quarterback whose team is poised for a record improvement that the market hasn’t priced. A team that went 8-9 last season but added a top-10 pick at a skill position and returns a healthy starter might jump to 12-5. If their quarterback is listed at 25/1 in MVP futures because of last year’s mediocre team record, and your analysis suggests a ceiling season, the price is wrong. That’s where I’ve had my best MVP bet returns – not on the favourites at 5/1, but on the undervalued candidates in the 15/1 to 30/1 range whose team trajectories are about to shift.

How do season-long NFL player props work?

Season-long player props are over/under bets on a player’s total production across the entire regular season – for example, total passing yards, total rushing touchdowns, or total receptions. You place the bet before or during the season, and it resolves after the final game of the regular season. Lines are set based on projected workload, health, and historical performance.

When is the best time to bet NFL win totals in the UK?

The best value on NFL win totals typically appears in late May through mid-June, after the draft but before training camp begins. Lines are least efficient at this point because the summer betting volume is thin and new roster information hasn’t been fully priced in. A second window opens during training camp in late July and August, when depth chart battles and scheme changes create pricing adjustments.
